Quest asked students of Mumbai schools: Should more be done to protect and preserve endangered animals?
Wildlife is of utmost importance to the society as it serves aesthetic, economic and educational purposes. Legislation has been enacted promoting preservation of endangered species. Factors like pollution and poaching led to animal species to be endangered, like mountain gorilla, Chinese giant salamander, Ethiopian wolf, northern white rhinoceros. Beginning of human revolution species becoming endangered.Governments and NGOs have taken steps to preserve the endangered species, but more needs to be done to protect these animals’ natural habitat. Protection against human intervention will boost conservation of natural ecosystem and ultimately the preservation of the endangered species. Deforestation also disturbs the delicate functioning of the natural ecosystem. The preservation of endangered animal species calls for concerted efforts against human exploitation from governments, organizations and the society at large. -Anika master, IX-E, St. Joseph’s High School, New Panvel – SSC
Yes, animals are disappearing. We all should pay more attention to our environment and animals by protecting them and make strict laws for the people destructing the animal life. The food chain and the cycle of animals is getting affected severely due to which the ecosystem is getting imbalanced. We all need to preserve and protect animals as responsible citizens and spread awareness on the issue. -Hia, Grade 5, Ryan Global School, Andheri
Many people have heard about Keiko, the killer whale that starred in the movie Free Willy. After seeing the movie, the audience discovered that the friendly whale in the movie was kept in a tank too small and was in bad health because of that and other complications that come with being taken from its natural habitat to a place where it can’t meet its own needs. Soon, a foundation was set up and money started pouring in from children and their schools to come up with a plan to free Keiko. There are wonderful stories about adorable animals that do something amazing or need our help. There are also stories about animals that are used in good and bad experiments. When you hear about the use of some animals for research, you feel like forgetting about research. There is a need to protect the endangered species. -Jayesh Ambre, IX A, St. Xavier’s High School, Kashigaon
Endangered animals are the ones who happen to be on the verge of extinction and are rarely found. Today, we find several endangered species but was the situation same before a millennium or prior to that? No, it is we humans who have made use of these poor creatures for our livelihood. To rectify this major mistake created by us I think we should preserve and protect endangered animals. Various remedial measures can be adopted for this purpose. Awareness creation, hybridization, zoo keeping, ban on wanton hunting and many more are methods to be used. Especially the regional villagers should be informed to avoid any mishaps with animals proving fatal in future. Not only endangered but we must also try to save the creatures around us. Hence, I deem that powerful measures should be implemented to safeguard the endangered species so that we won’t find any more extinct genus further. -Jidnyasa S. Malvi, IX – D, St. Lawrence High School, Borivali – (W)
Nature is a gift and wildlife is our need. Wildlife is to be preserved for the present as well as for the future generation. Forests being the habitat for animals is been destroyed due to increasing population. This keeps the animals void from their food as well. To preserve the animals, the government should implement programs to spread awareness the importance of animal life as well as build Zoo for the animals. Tree plantation should also be given importance. Strict laws should be implemented against animal hunting or destruction of natural habitat. Animals are very important and we should all as responsible citizens do our best to preserve them. -Kalika, GRADE 7,

We know that animal species have appeared and disappeared since life began on Earth. This is a natural phenomenon. However, these species have been vanishing at a much faster rate because of human factors such as pollution, poaching, hunting, and deforestation. Thus, I believe that endangered animals need to be protected more because they are on the brink of extinction. What can we do to avoid this?
We humans can help these species and get them off this endangered list. Wildlife conservation is the practise of protecting wild animal species and their habitats. Also, the wildlife conservation ensures us that nature will be there around the future generations to enjoy and recognise the importance of wildlife and wilderness lands to humans. Each and every nation must start with government agencies dedicated to wildlife conservation, which help to implement policies designed to protect and preserve endangered animals. An endangered species is actually defined as a population of living being that is at the danger of becoming extinct because of several reasons. They may include that the species has a very low population or is threatened by us i.e. humans. hence, it is necessary to peep into this effort of protecting and preserving this endangered animals especially for our environment. -Mansi Dhadke, VIII, St. Lawrence High School, Borivali-(W)
Yes, we should help extinct animals. I think we should help endangered animals before they get extinct. What if all our favorite animals become extinct? What if it turns out we are the only animals on the earth? Do you know why humans will probably never get extinct? Because we have other animals to eat that are not endangered or extinct. If we didn’t have those other animal to eat, we would be extinct by now. If you let species that are endangered go extinct, you will majorly disrupt the circle of life, let alone the food chain. It can affect us too what if certain animals like shark, cows, buffaloes, snake, birds and etc went extinct? People would be out of food jobs and more. Why would you let some of the worlds beautiful creatures of go extinct? Why? Therefore more should be done to protect and preserve endangered animals. -Mukul Gaikwad, IX-A, St. Mary’s High School, Mira
Endangered animals are those which are under a serious threat of extinction. This is very lamentable. The lives of so many animals are endangered today, mainly due to human activities. Climate change as well as cutting down of forests results in loss of habitat for animals, as does pollution. Hunting and whaling have also contributed to decrease in numbers of land and marine animals. To control the imbalance this is causing in the ecological cycle, it is necessary to take drastic steps. More should be done to protect and preserve endangered animals.Through governments have granted protection to a few animals like the tiger, the population of many other animals is still decreasing rapidly. They are endangered and on the brink of extinction. Therefore, more action must be taken and stricter bans implemented. Better regulations must be laid down. The more we do to preserve our endangered animals, the better it is. -Sneha Phadke, II-D, C, Cambridge School, Andheri
The whale populations around the world have plummeted since the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of these great animals have become extinct while others are in great danger of becoming extinct. The main culprit in their demise is man. Mankind, knowingly or unknowingly, have single handedly put this beautiful creatures at death’s door. Human actions such as whaling, over-fishing, pollution and many others are killing these magnificent creatures to a point at which we do not know if they can recover. There are many reasons why these mammals should be saved. One is their right to live in and of itself; these and all animals do have rights. Another point in preserving these animals is the genetic material of which they offer us. A lot of people do not understand how this could be beneficial to the human race, however this is a major key in our own survival and to keep this information can only better us. We can also learn from these animals. These animals’ behavior patterns are startlingly similar to that of our own. -Siddiqui Fiza, IX-A, St. Xavier’s High School, Kashigaon
A species is considered endangered if it is at a risk of becoming extinct, which can be due to a number of reasons, from climate change to human influence to even arguably natural cases. Factors such as pollution, habitat loss and poaching have led to many animal species becoming endangered. Examples of endangered animals are lynx, white rhinoceros and tigers.Animals are a gift to us. Without animals we would not have meat or other food resources. We should protect them as much as we can by keeping our eco-system healthy. If not for the animals, then for the ecosystem. The ecosystem depends on every living creature no matter how unimportant it may seem to be.
By a species getting extinct, it causes a chain of problems altogether. It can also disturb the whole of the food chain. So the protection and preservation of endangered species should be done more. -Sharvni Saxena, VII – D,
