The Maharashtra cabinet will meet on Wednesday and discuss the relief measures that should be extended to farmers hit by unseasonal rain in the state.

While the weather department has forecast unseasonal rain and hailstorms in several parts of the state for the next few days, a yellow alert has been sounded in parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Konkan and Western Maharashtra for the next 24 hours.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have already directed district authorities to conduct panchnamas to ascertain the crop damage, on high priority.

As per a preliminary report, the unseasonal rains and hailstorms have affected crops sown on 1.25 lakh hectares. A final report is awaited.

The untimely rains are likely to impact the jowar and cotton crops in Vidarbha and Marathwada region; mangoes and grapes in the Konkan; and onions in north Maharashtra.
