Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the number of local train services in Mumbai will increase by 10 per cent in the near future.

He made the announcement while highlighting major projects announced in the Union Budget that will benefit the state, especially the Mumbai suburban railway network.

Currently, there are 3,200 local train services in Mumbai and the number is expected to increase to 3,500. Mumbai locals are set to become more comfortable and convenient for passengers as railway authorities are working on manufacturing trains with new designs to provide a smoother ride with less vibration and more air circulation.

In addition, improvements to the signalling system are underway to reduce the gap between trains, with plans to decrease the current headway of 180 seconds to 150 seconds, and later to 120 seconds.

Along with expanding the rail services in the state, new tracks, new terminals and extension of existing tracks will be undertaken. A tripartite agreement has been made for the completion of these projects. According to the agreement, the state government, Indian Railways and RBI will collaborate, with the RBI covering the costs incurred by the state government in the joint schemes.
