UNESCO world heritage site Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Railway Station in Mumbai is undergoing a comprehensive transformation to enhance passenger experience.

The work is being done by preserving the historical significance of the railway station, the Central Railway (CR) said.

The appointed contractor has completed the site office setup work. Additionally, the drone survey, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) survey, hard barricading work, soil investigation and mobilisation of site works, topographical survey, aerial survey, and a GTI (Geotechnical Testing & Inspection) in the circulating areas near Platform number 18 have also been completed.

The CR said currently, inventory details for works in the traffic accounts building, new administrative building, old annex building, parcel office building and platform number 18 are being compiled.

CR officials added that the shore piling work, utility survey, temporary office shifting, inventory of existing structures and support activity at Wadi Bunder are also in progress.

RLDA (Rail Land Development Authority) is the nodal agency appointed by the Ministry of Railways for the execution of the project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project in January.

According to the CR, the project is being undertaken under the Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) contract and was awarded to M/s. Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Limited, New Delhi, at a total investment of Rs 2,450 crore.

The scope of work includes the construction of a divisional railway manager (DRM) complex (G+4), rest houses (G+2), passenger-related retail buildings, parcel buildings, linen buildings, mechanical department buildings, long-distance and suburban nodes and concourses, foot over bridges (FOBs), skywalks, new headquarters for the Central Railway at the Heritage Node (G+4), thorough roof refurbishment, development of circulating areas, restoration of heritage buildings, landscaping, art works, ballast-less tracks and boundary walls among others.

At the CSMT, the area to be developed is 4.61 lakh sq metre out of which, new constructions will be done on 2.79 lakh sq meter, refurbishment will be done on 1.3 lakh sq meter and the circulation area will consist of 37,703 sq meter area. Other landscaping works will be done on 13,412 sq metre area, the CR said.
