Two teenage boys drowned on Monday in a water-filled ditch on the banks of the Mithi river near Shamita Complex in Saki Naka, police said.

According to the Saki Naka police, the boys accompanied by a group of friends left their house for swimming around noon. They reached the banks of the Mithi river near Shamita Complex at Jari Mari Nagar in Kurla, where the BMC’s drain widening drive is in progress. It is this spot where the boys drowned in the ditch dug apparently as part of the widening drive.

The deceased later were identified as Wahid Sheikh (18) and Irfan Sheikh (13),residents of Baba Miya Chawl near Mohammedi Masjid at Saki Naka.

“Around half an hour later, the other boys, who were still frolicking in the water, realised that Wahid and Irfan were missing. After calling out and searching for them in the water, they panicked as the boys were no where to be found. Then they rushed to their homes and informed their parents,” said an official of the Saki Naka police station.

“The parents called the fire brigade and the bodies were fished out at around 3 pm,and sent to the Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem,” said Senior Police Inspector Yashwant Namdeo Vatkar from the Saki Naka police station.

The police hinted that the boys could have gone swimming towards the ditch and unsuspectingly fell in it,panicked and drowned. Meanwhile, the police have registered the case as an accidental death and have recorded the statements of the parents of both the deceased as well as of the other boys who were part of the group.
