TWO people were killed and three injured in Kolshewadi,Kalyan East,Friday morning when a speeding tractor lost control at a busy intersection.
Police said the incident occurred around 10.15 am,when the driver of a tractor headed for Netivali from Khadegolvali lost control on a slope towards Vijaynagar Chowk.
The vehicle hit two pedestrians,three autorickshaws and two motorcycles.
Two people were killed on the spot. The three injured were taken to Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan East. One of them suffered serious injuries to the head,police said.
Vitthal Shivram Chavan (25),a cowherd from Vijaynagar,was on his way home when the tractor crushed him to death.
Police said the tractor then hit 68-year-old Anand Laxman Zhara,a retired bank employee and Vijaynagar resident,killing him.
We have not arrested the tractor driver yet. Investigation is underway. Once we record the statements of eyewitnesses,we will charge the accused under Section 304 (A) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The tractor driver told us that the vehicles brakes failed,which led to the accident. We will verify his claim, said J S Lohalkar,senior inspector,Kolshewadi police station.
