The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday registered an offence of corruption against two senior Income Tax officials including an official of the rank of assistant commissioner.
According to senior officials at the ACB,the bureau acted after allegations of corruption by a builder and a real estate contractor. The complainants alleged that Rajkumar Bhatia,an assistant commissioner of Income Tax asked for an amount of Rs 15,00,000 from the builder. As per negotiations initiated by Bhatia,Rs 12,50,000 was to be given in parts to the I-T official with the first installment pegged at Rs two lakh.
The builder was asked to hand over the amount to an investigating officer,Suresh Khaitan,at the parking area below the Income Tax office at Charni Road. The CBI laid a trap on Wednesday and the team first caught Khaitan when he allegedly came to collect the amount and later confronted Bhatia. The CBI is conducting a raid at the residence of Bhatia. Both the officers are being interrogated.
