The Thane police Friday arrested two persons for allegedly plotting to gun down a Thane-based builder, who had refused to pay an extortion amount of Rs 10 crore to a gangster. One of the two accused persons had been booked by the Surat police earlier for making threat calls to the owner of Parag Saree, Shivnarayan Agarwal, in 2004. A press release from the Thane police in connection with the 2004 case read: “The caller had threatened Agarwal to pay up the remaining fee to actress Shilpa Shetty, who had appeared in advertisements for Parag saree back then.”
An officer from the Thane Anti-Extortion Cell that arrested Nitin Gopal (42) and Dinesh Rai (51) said the Thane-based builder had informed them about threat calls from a gangster who demanded Rs 10 crore. As the police were investigating the case, they received a tip off that the two accused were on their way to fire at the builder.
The police laid a trap and arrested the duo from Thane. Two pistols and four live cartridges were found on the accused. During questioning, it came to light that Rai had been arrested earlier by Surat police for making the threat calls.
