A local NCP leader from Oshiwara, who also runs a hardware business at the Saraf Kaskar Industrial Estate, was allegedly attacked by the chairman of the estate and his goons on Monday.

The victim Shakil Ahmed Kazi, who is the president of NCP’s ward no 53 in Jogeshwari, claimed that the accused,Shafiq-ul-Rehman,who is also reportedly a member of a rival political party, and his brother Shahnawaz assaulted him because he had tried to expose illegalities in the estate.

“Mine and the shop of the accused are in the same line at the estate. On Monday when I returned from a trip to my native place I went behind my shop to click a photo of the electric meter. A few days back the accused installed an air-conditioner dangerously close to the electric meter. The wires of my meter had melted due to the heat and the Reliance authorities had advised me to send an RTI application. I wanted to take a snap to send with the form,” alleged Kazi. He said that at that time he was attacked from behind.

Rehman, his brother Shahnawaz and another man allegedly rained blows on Kazi and repeatedly hit him on his private parts. “As I lay writhing in pain, they summoned the police themselves. When the mobile vans of the police arrived the accused shooed all the bystanders and shut the gates. Thankfully my brother and a friend who owns a shop on the other side of the road rushed to my rescue and took me to the Cooper Hospital,” said Kazi.

Toosif Qureshi, who had rushed Kazi to the hospital, alleged that the Oshiwara police had initially refused to register a complaint. “Though the incident happened on Monday morning the Oshiwara police registered the complaint only on Tuesday night and that too after Deputy Commissioner of Police,Niket Kaushik, ordered them to. Besides assault, both the accused were also booked for causing damage to Kazi’s camera and stealing his money,” said Qureshi.

Actress Kunika Lal who campaigned for NCP said that she will take up the issue of ‘citizen’s safety and police apathy’.

Police inspector (Crime) Dattatre Sankhe of the Oshiwara police said that they are on the lookout for both the accused and attributed the delay in registering the complaint to their inability to record Kazi’s statement as he was undergoing treatment.
