A 29-year-old television actress, Malvi Malhotra, was stabbed in her abdomen and hands by a man allegedly for turning down his marriage proposal. The police said the accused, Yogesh Mahipal Singh, who claimed to be a producer, attacked her with a knife in Andheri’s Versova area around 9 pm on Monday.

Locals rushed her to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, where she is recuperating, the police said. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and stalking against Singh.

Malhotra, who is from Himachal Pradesh, has worked in several television shows. She has also featured in Telugu and Hindi movies.

In her statement to the police, the actor said “she received a friend request from Singh on Facebook in 2019”. She accepted it. After that, the two chatted often. They even met three-four times at a coffee shop, she told the police.

Since then Singh kept insisting that she marry him. After refusing his proposal, the complainant started ignoring him, the police said. Malhotra told the police that Singh kept following her. “I was in Dubai for a shooting and returned to Mumbai on Sunday. I saw him waiting below my building, but I ignored him and went to my house,” she said in her statement.

However, at 9 pm on Monday, when she was walking towards her residence at Fisheries Road in Versova, Andheri, the accused arrived in his Audi. “He stopped his car next to her and insisted that she talk to him, but as she ignored him, the accused removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed her thrice,” she said in her statement to the police. The accused then fled.

Senior police inspector Raghvendra Thakur of Versova police station said teams have been deputed to trace the culprit.
