THE TRUCK driver arrested by the Khalapur police in connection with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway accident on May 28 has been remanded in judicial custody until June 14 by a local court. The driver,Somnath Phadtare, has not applied for bail before the court, said investigating officers.
The accident took place on the carriageway leading to Pune around 12.15 am on May 28 when Phadtare rammed into a parked convoy of two buses headed to Pune, killing 27 persons and injuring 26.
The buses carried a wedding entourage heading back to Pune after attending the wedding in Mumbai. The buses had stopped one after the other after the first bus suffered a flat tyre.
While a mechanic was repairing the bus, passengers sat in the space between the two buses. Phadtare, who was driving a truck from Mumbais Ulhasnagar area to Kolhapur, allegedly rammed into the bus parked behind, which moved ahead and crushed those sitting in between the two buses.
Phadtare was arrested by the Khalapur police and charged under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder),279 (rash and negligent driving),337 (causing hurt by act endangering life of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
Senior inspector I S Patil of Khalapur police said After he completed his police custody remand,we produced Phadtare in a court. He has been sent to judicial custody until June 14, said Patil.
An officer from Khalapur Police also said Phadtare broke down after he was produced in court.
He had stopped short of showing remorse earlier, but cried after he was sent to judicial custody, said an officer.
