A truck allegedly filled with hazardous biomedical waste was intercepted by BMC corporator Reshma Nivekar Sunday.
Nivekar,of ward 129,alleged that the refuse from the bio medical incinerator at Deonar dumping ground was being ferried illegally. The private truck was allegedly carrying 200 plastic bags filled with used syringes,saline bottles,urine bags and needles. The driver told us he was taking the waste to recycle. We seized the truck. The driver and cleaner fled, said Nivekar.
The truck was taken to Deonar police station and the case was transferred to Mankhurd station. Police said the truck was at Deonar Abattoir.SMS Envoclean has held the contract for dumping biomedical waste for the past 20 years, said Nivekar. BMC will send a health officer to inspect the truck and if any irregularities are found,a case will be registered, said an officer.
The nuisance detector squad has fined them. I have asked for the report Monday, said Kishore Gandhi,ward officer.
