The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations (BMC) garden department said it has completed all the required pre-monsoon tree cutting and pruning in the city,by chopping 340 dead and dangerous trees and trimming 11,629 others in public premises.
Under pressure due to many deaths, due to tree falling accidents,during the previous two monsoon the BMC said they completed the activity by May 31.
We have completed trimming of 11,629 trees identified for the purpose,and 340 trees,which were found to be dead and dangerous, said Kamalshankar Yadav,Superintendent of Gardens,BMC.
Concrete paver blocks around trees,which had been found to be one of the major reasons for tree falls during monsoon last year,have been removed from around most trees to give them breathing space,he said. Even leaning or bent trees have been balanced,he added.
Of the 11,629 trimmed trees,4,521 belong to the island city,4,040 to the western suburbs and 3,068 to the eastern suburbs. Of the 340 dead and dangerous trees that were cut,41 were in the island city,263 in western suburbs and 36 in the eastern suburbs.
We have also warned housing societies,private land owners having dangerous trees on their premises to carry out the required cutting or trimming after seeking permission from the Tree Authority, said Yadav.
