The traffic police have registered 26 cases against road contractors in Mumbai, primarily for not adhering to set deadlines, the police said. According to data recorded between October 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015, the Colaba traffic chowky registered 13 cases and the Mulund chowky booked nine contractors. The police said these cases are called Local Act Cases (LAC) since they were registered under the Bombay Police (BP) Act, 1951. Further, 10 of the 26 cases were registered under Section 102 of the Act, which is for causing any obstruction in a street. Eight other contractors were booked for similar charges under Section 115 (causing nuisance).

According to the Bombay Police Act, penalties for persons who contravene any of the provisions of Sections 99 to 116 (both inclusive) shall, on conviction, be punished with fine, which may extend to Rs 200.
The remaining eight contractors out of the 26 cases were booked under Section 33 of BP Act, which empowers the police to make rules and regulations of traffic and for presentation of order in public place because of road construction.
