With the state chief secretary Jayant Banthia giving a go-ahead,the traffic police department will begin an exclusive drive against vehicles with tinted glasses deputed on government service from Thursday. Based on a review,Banthia had said three days ago that government officials were misusing their status and travelling in vehicles with tinted glasses even though it is against the law, traffic police officials said.
The traffic police have also been asked to take action against those officials who are not entitled to use beacons on their vehicles. “Administrative rules define the offices and ranks that can have vehicles with beacons. Those misusing it will be penalised and their beacons taken away,” said an official. The department has been given a list of officials entitled to beacons, said officers.
Traffic police have also been directed to take off the films forcibly if needed, said officers. Government employees would also face legal consequences if they do not comply with the rules, they added.
Since the renewed crackdown on tinted glass began in 2012,the traffic police have penalised 2,03,355 four-wheeler drivers and collected a fine of Rs 1.72 crore till date. The drive was further intensified after the Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction over the tardy implementation of its directives. Between 2009 and 2012,the traffic cops had registered 70,586 cases of vehicles using tinted glasses and collected a fine of Rs 41.11 lakh. On May 4,2012,the apex court ordered police across the country to not only fine drivers, but also remove tinted films from glasses.
Vivek Phansalkar,Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said,“Law shall be implemented uniformly.”
