A TRAFFIC police constable was killed and another seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in Bhiwandi Monday,police said. The accused is absconding.
Police said constables Sanjay Mundhe (43) and Pravin Suryavanshi (39),posted at Matunga traffic division,were riding to their Kalyan home on the latters motorbike,when a Maruti Wagon R car allegedly knocked them down.
The accident occurred around 1.30 am on Bhiwandi bypass,off the Bhiwandi-Nashik highway. The car driver sped off towards Nashik without stopping,police said.
Mundhe,who was riding pillion without a helmet,suffered severe head injuries. Both were rushed to Jupiter Hospital in Thane,where Mundhe was pronounced brought dead. Suryavanshi,who was wearing a helmet,suffered a fracture in the left arm. He was shifted to Fortis Hospital in Mulund and was recuperating police said.
Police said an eyewitness who called the control room found broken pieces of the number plate of the Wagon R. We found several pieces scattered at the site of the accident and have recovered most of the number except the last digit. Our officers are at the Thane RTO,where the car is registered,and are attempting numeric combinations and a probe is on, said senior inspector D H Patil of Narpoli police station.
