Boys seventh seed Oum Parikh of Ahmedabad stunned second seed K.S. Vishisht Raam of Tamil Nadu to storm into the semi-finals,in the Parsram J. Vazirani Memorial All India Junior Open Talent Series Tennis Tournament for boys and girls under-12,at the Vazirani National Sports Academy,Nerul,Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.
Parikh,of Zydus School of Excellence,Vejalpur overcame favourite Raam 4-1,5-3 in an exciting contest that lasted 75 minutes. Relying on an attacking forehand,Parikh smashed a slew of winners to win the first set comfortably. The early setback caught Raam offguard before he made a strong bid to keep his hopes alive in the second set.
Parikh surged to a crucial 2-0 lead in the set,but in a determined effort Raam battled back to snatch three games in a row for a 3-2 lead that put his opponent under pressure. That effort and the scorching heat however took its toll on a tiring Raam as Parikh came back to win three in a row to take the set and match away for a semi-final showdown with third seed Rayyan Sayed of Nashik.
In another upset of the day,eighth seed Rahul Verma beat fourth seed Aditya Sriram 4-2,4-1 in an all-Maharashtra tie to set up a semi-final with top seed Siddhanth Bhavnani who escaped to a 4-0,4-5 (5-7),4-1 win over qualifier Abhishek Mangle of Pune.
