The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) will soon offer an Executive PhD programme, a first ever such offering by a conventional university for working professionals to pursue PhD studies in Social Science subjects.

Aimed at providing a chance of academic and career enhancement to working professionals, this Executive PhD programme will be offered in hybrid mode to match with busy schedules of its students who will have full-time jobs. Likely to start from the  academic year 2026-27, individuals with masters level education will be eligible to apply for admission to this course. However, the admission procedure will be designed by the institute soon which will include an entrance test as well as personal interview.

Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari, newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the TISS, said, “This would be the first such executive PhD programme in social science, offered by a conventional university. It will be useful for working professionals from social science allied sectors for personal growth and career enhancement.”

Considering the specialised nature of the programme, the module will be different from the regular PhD programme offered at the TISS. Prof. Anil Sutar, Dean of School of Research Methodology at the TISS, said, “While it will ensure that there is no dilution in quality, it will have a flexible approach to accommodate working professionals. These changes may include, instead of everyday course-work, there will be a consolidated 15-day workshop for which these candidates can take leave from work to join. Whereas there will be regular online sessions for course work as well as guide support.”

Prof. Sutar said that the programme is already approved by the academic council of the TISS, it is pending for approval from the executive council; following which details such as intake capacity and fee-structure will be finalised. Further highlighting the teaching process, he said, “Considering that the students of this programme come with industry experience, they will have more relevant industry challenges that are required to be researched. The teaching team thus will have to include industry experts too. And that can be possible through the system of Professor of Practice where industry professionals with significant experience can be appointed as professors.”

The Under-Graduate (UG) courses offered at the TISS will also witness revision with a bigger basket of new minor courses for students to obtain credit. Prof. Sunil Santha, Dean of Academic Affairs, at the institute, said, “We are in the process of finalising a more diverse basket of minor courses for UG students. These will be some new age skills such as use of AI in social science etc.”
