Thundershowers in city,more likely today

Although the southwest monsoon is on the verge of withdrawal from Mumbai,the city witnessed thundershowers on Monday,with the Colaba weather station recording 40 mm in just three hours from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm while Santacruz recorded 25.5 mm.

The Met department said such thundershowers generally occur during withdrawal and attributed it to a weather system over the Bay of Bengal. “Thundershowers are a usual phenomenon during the monsoon withdrawal period. These thundershowers have occurred under the influence of a low pressure area over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh,” said Ajay Kumar,director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meanwhile,the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the city,which was expected sometime in the first week of October,has been delayed further. “The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Maharashtra,including Mumbai,is expected only after October 7,” said NY Apte,Deputy Director General of Meteorology,IMD Mumbai.

Rain or thundershowers would occur in parts of city and suburbs on Tuesday,said the IMD website.
