Three constables of the Pune police headquarters jumped off a moving train in pursuit of a prisoner they were escorting, who had flung himself out in a bid to escape near Bijapur in Karnataka. The injured constables, who were on Friday in a Solapur hospital, reached Pune early on Saturday and were admitted to a hospital.
Constables Vikas Hiraman Phule (23),Shrinath Sampat Kamble (23) and Hanumant Sopan Masal (27),along with Havaldar T M Kokane, had escorted Siddharam Shivkiran Mangrule (32),who was lodged in Yerawada jail in connection with a murder case,to Karnataka for trial in another murder case. Mangrule was also severely injured in the incident.
Besides two murder cases, there is an attempt-to-murder case and a theft case against Mangrule,a resident of Akkalkot in Solapur district, who was supposed to be presented before a court in Indi,in Bijapur district of Karnataka,on November 10.
The team reached Indi on the day,but the court was closed. So they produced Mangrule before a Bijapur court, which set the next hearing for November 23.
