Sarnaik shared the update after holding a review meeting at the headquarters of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) with senior officials
The tender process for the long-awaited Line 10 of Mumbai Metro, between Gaimukh (Thane) and Shivaji Chowk (Mira-Bhayander), will begin by December 15, paving the way for construction work on the Rs 8,000-crore corridor, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Tuesday.
Sarnaik shared the update after holding a review meeting at the headquarters of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) with senior officials, including Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Mira-Bhayander Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma, and Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Kumar Mudgal.
According to the officials, the proposed 9.7-km, fully elevated line will start from Gaimukh in Thane and run through Gaimukh Retibunder, Chena Gaon, Varsova Gaon, Kashimira and Miragaon, before ending at Shivaji Chowk. The route is expected to significantly ease the heavy vehicular traffic load on Ghodbunder Road, one of Thane’s most congested stretches. Officials estimate that by 2031, the corridor will handle more than 4.5 lakh commuters each day, offering faster access to Mumbai and Mira-Bhayander.
“The project will also improve connectivity with other metro routes, with interchange facilities at Gaimukh (Line 4A) and Miragaon (Line 9), allowing smoother travel across the wider Mumbai network. A metro depot has been planned at Mogharpada,” the official said.
Clearances related to forest land, mangroves, CRZ and wildlife zones are in progress, while the appointed consultant has already prepared the tender documents.
Calling the line a key link for Thane’s rapidly growing suburbs, Sarnaik said the metro would bring “quicker, cleaner and more reliable travel” to thousands of daily commuters. The government aims to complete the project by 2030.
