The Mumbai Crime Branch on Monday arrested two Thane residents who allegedly broke into a jewellery shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut last week and fled with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 57.46 lakh.
According to the police, one of the accused, Saurabh Tanaji Sathe, 25, was a former employee of the shop, and he plotted the theft with the help of his friend, Mohan Maruti Pawar, who is the second accused, allegedly to teach his employer a lesson for sacking him six months ago.
The two men reached Meerut on August 7, broke into the jewellery shop, and made away with the gold and silver ornaments via train to Mumbai, said a police officer.
Soon after the incident, the Meerut police alerted the Mumbai Crime Branch based on technical evidence, informed them that the accused were on their way to Mumbai, and shared pictures of Sathe, he added.
The police officers laid a trap at Borivali railway station, but were unable to identify Sathe due to the huge crowd at the station.
However, the police nabbed the accused from Borivali (West) based on the mobile tower location early on August 11. (Express Photo)

The Meerut police reached Mumbai and took the custody of the accused, the officer added.
According to the Mumbai police, the jeweller sacked Sathe six months ago and also insulted him, which he did not like. Sathe had been working there for two years.
Sathe came to his house in Diva, Thane, discussed the plan with his friend Pawar, and decided to steal ornaments from the shop.
The accused men do not have any previous cases, said a police officer.
