In his nearly two decade-long career, photographer Vikram Bawa has built a steady portfolio of work that spans across films, fashion and art. While his skills with the camera have led to his photographs winning several awards, the latest feather in his cap is a nomination at the International Fashion Film Awards (IFFA) that take place annually in the US.
The Long Show, a fashion film that Bawa made for designers Falguni and Shane Peacock, has been nominated in the Best Art Direction and Best Music categories at IFFA 2014. It will be screened at the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival in California later this month. This is the first time an Indian filmmaker/photographer has been invited and nominated at the awards. The IFFA was instituted to recognise the best in the field of fashion production — from hair and make-up artistes, stylists, art directors, musicians and writers.
“It feels scary and exciting since I’m the first Indian to be nominated. I’m competing with global icons at the awards, including David Zimmerman, Ellen Von Unwerth, Nadav Kander. I look forward to showing The Long Show there,” says Bawa, who believes that fashion films differ from his other works in a way that they weave stories through visuals, as opposed to having a fixed narrative. “It’s like seeing art at a gallery,” he says.
Bawa adds that he has been pushing fashion films as an important medium for recognition since the past four years, having made films for several other Indian designers, such as Nikhil Thampi, Jewles by Queenie and Delna Poonawala. “In this age of YouTube and social media, it’s the best way for a brand to reach out and grow.”
