Antop Hill police have said the day Meghna Khanna (19) hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her house last week, followed by her father Ramesh jumping to death, she was to take admission in second year of her degree course. She had told a friend she did not want to burden her father financially.
Police, who have been recording statements of Meghnas friends, said she spoke to Shivam Goel, who lives in Himachal Pradesh,at 3.47 pm on June 3. The family was in a dire financial situation due to Rameshs gambling debts. On Monday,Meghna was to pay fees to enroll in second year. She told Goel she did not want to burden her father with the cost of her studies, said sub-inspector Pravin Munde.
Meghna, who had passed her first year bachelor of mass media exam at Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Matunga, lived with father Ramesh and older sister Priyanka in a rented home in building eight of Punjabi Colony in Antop Hill.
Police said Ramesh,an excessive gambler, had operated three clubs 10 years ago and had recently racked up a debt of Rs 3 lakh.
Meghna was trying to persuade him to give up gambling but he wouldnt listen. He would sometimes stay away from home for two days at a stretch. The family had little money and had to rely on close relatives, though Priyanka worked at Tata Consultancy Services, he said.
Police said Ramesh and Meghna argued last Monday and he left home between 3.30 pm and 4 pm. At 9.30 pm,Priyanka, who returned home from work, found the door locked from inside.
A neighbour looked into the Khannas home through a window and saw Meghna hanging from the ceiling fan.
While Priyanka immediately contacted Ramesh, neighbours forced open the door.
Following Goels statements, police also spoke to another Delhi-based friend of Meghna and recorded statements of two others living in Mumbai on June 10.
