After the 17-year-old son of a retired police officer shot himself with his father’s revolver in Andheri west Tuesday evening, the Versova police Wednesday asked the boy’s parents and authorities at his school to record their statements. It is being probed whether the victim committed suicide because of depression due to low attendance record in school.
At 8.30pm on Tuesday, Versova police officers received a call about a suicide at the Golden Heights building located near the telephone exchange in the Four Bungalows area at Andheri west. On reaching the spot, they found that the deceased, identified as Ashish Mohite, had shot himself with his father’s licensed revolver.
“The bullet had pierced the right temple of the boy,” said A Rane, senior police inspector of Versova police station. Ashish was the only son of a retired police officer who had opted for voluntary retirement and had opened a security agency. The deceased had not left any suicide note behind. However, his father Ganesh Mohite, who retired as as a police inspector, told the police that he had committed suicide due to depression.
Ganesh told the police that on Tuesday evening, his family had gone out leaving Ashish alone at home. When they returned, they found Ashish lying in a pool of blood in the living room.
Rane said that a day before, Ganesh had received a call from Ashish’s school complaining that his attendance was low, and that he would not be permitted to appear for the exams. Ashish was an HSC student. He had scored 85 percent in SSC, but his grades had dropped last year, said the police.
Officers investigating the case said that Ashish’s parents have said that he had been depressed due to poor marks, and that he might have panicked after he heard his father had been called to his school because of his low attendance.
“We have registered an accidental death report. However, we have asked the school principal and teachers to confirm the reason behind Ashish’s death,” said Rane.
