Teacher held for sending ‘obscene’ pics to teen

The matter was reported to the police after the principal of the school came to know about it from the student’s parents.

A physical education teacher with the St Mary’s Boys School (SSC) in Mazgaon was arrested for allegedly sending pornographic material to a student at the school via messaging application WhatsApp earlier this year.

Byculla police said the suspect, Suresh Singh, sent ‘pornographic images and video clips’ to a 17-year-old Class X student of the school via WhatsApp between April and May. The matter was reported to the police after the principal of the school came to know about it from the student’s parents.

“The principal submitted a letter to the Byculla police on August 14 and after inquiring into the matter, a complaint was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act as well as the Information Technology Act. Singh was arrested on Saturday evening and after being produced in court on Sunday, he has been remanded to police custody for four days,” said DCP S Jayakumar.

Police are interrogating Singh and will also check his cellphone.

The boy’s parents said they felt it was necessary to inform the school about the incident as soon as their son told them about it. “Our son informed us about this two months later… that the teacher has been sending obscene messages and video clips. We went to the school and informed the principal about it. The teacher had stopped sending messages after that. However, this is a matter of grave concern for others. Like our son, he must be sending such obscene images and video clips to other students too,” said the boy’s mother. Although the parents did not file a police complaint, the school decided to do so.

The school management has also issued a memo to Singh and is contemplating holding back his next increment or suspending him. “We thought it was necessary to file an FIR,” said Fr. Baptist Pinto, principal of the school.

According to school authorities, the student passed SSC from the school earlier this year and moved out. He, however, continued to stay in touch with the PT teacher through text messages.
