A TEACHER of a Navi Mumbai school was arrested Monday for allegedly hitting a student with a duster leading to fracture of a finger of her right hand. The Khandeshwar police made the arrest after the parents of the student of Class V registered a complaint against the teacher and the principal of St Joseph’s High School, Panvel.
“The teacher was arrested on Monday and produced in Panvel court which granted her bail. Investigation is on,” said Yogesh More, senior inspector, Khandeshwar police station.
On Saturday, the teacher was booked for voluntarily causing grievous hurt under Section 325 and criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code. The child’s mother said that the 11-year-old girl had returned from school on Saturday after an extra class complaining of acute pain in her right hand.
“She initially refused to reveal what had happened in school but eventually, when the pain increased, she told me that the teacher had hit her with a wooden duster,” said the mother alleging that the teacher had hit the child for forgetting to bring a book to class. The girl suffered a fracture on her right hand, said her mother.
“The fracture is on the right hand, which is worse. She can neither write nor eat by herself until the injury heals. I am worried for my child’s safety in the school now. What if she was hit on the head?” said the mother adding that the teacher had beaten several other students in the class
Incidentally, the girl belongs to a special section created by the school for children whose parents have opposed the school’s fee hike. The mother has alleged that students in the section were being targeted as their parents had challenged the school management. More said that the police were investigating the matter and trying to ascertain the role, if any, of the principal in the case. So far, the principal has not faced prosecution in the matter.
