A private taxi rammed into a school bus on Mulund flyover on Monday evening. The collision forced the bus backwards and only a metal fencing prevented it from plunging 30 feet below onto a slum.
The accident occurred at 6.15 pm on Monday on the Khindipada flyover on the Goregaon- Mulund Link Road. The taxi, a Maruti Eeco car, was on way to Sonapur in Mulund from Khindipada. According to the police, 58-year-old Ravindra Sawant, the vehicle’s owner was driving down a steep slope of the flyover when he lost control of the car.
“Sawant jumped the divider and collided with a school bus,” said Senior Inspector Rajaram Vhanmane of Mulund police station. The bus, owned by Vaze School in Mulund West, was carrying 21 children. The force of the collision caused the bus to retreat nearly 25 feet back. It got stuck in the flyover’s railing, the police said. “The railing prevented the bus from falling from the flyover,” said Inspector Ankush Waghmode of Mulund police station.
He added that at that time, the bus was 30 feet above the ground. A 10-year-old boy suffered minor injuries to the head, Waghmode said. Sawant, however, was crushed inside the vehicle, and the police and bystanders had to extricate him from the vehicle’s rear. Sawant has been booked for rash driving.
