Boxer Priyanka Digambar Belkhede, who allegedly committed suicide on Friday night, was not a keen boxer but had surprised many by winning the State Championship Trophy in Maharashtra,in the 69 kilogram weight category,in October 2008. According to officials,Belkhede shifted to Mumbai after recently graduating with a degree in physical education from a college in Washim.

A native of Akola,Belkhede,24,had also represented the state in the National Boxing Championship in Agra in 2008. The RCF police investigating the suicide have learnt from the family that she had been training in the game for the last decade.

In the boxing circle, not many were sure if Belkhede wanted to take up boxing as a fulltime career. “We knew that her interest had moved from boxing to becoming a physical trainer. She wanted to be in sports but experiment with other options at the same time,” said a boxing official. A spokesperson of the Maharahstra Boxing Association said,“It is difficult to comment on her career since she was not seen in the circuit in the last year.

Belkhede was found dead at her Chembur flat by her younger sister Komal, also a boxer. According to the family,Belkdede was depressed as her boxing career did not take off. According to the police, the victim’s father had gone to Akola when the incident occurred. The two sisters,Komal and Priyanka, had recently moved to Mumbai from Akola to stay with their father at the HPCL quarters in September 2009. In absence of a suicide note, the police will have to depend on the statements of the family.
