Two close friends of an American student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, who alleged she was gangraped in April, have been quoted extensively in the police’s 300-page chargesheet, filed just days before the end of the 90-day deadline.

It accuses Vinamra Soni,Jaskaran Singh Bhullar alias Karan,Harshawardhan Yadav,Anish Borkataki,Dev Cyrus Kolabawala and Kundan Borgonain.

The police have sought to build their case on the basis of statements by the American’s male friend Rishubh Choksi, whom she called up the day after the alleged rape, and female friend Annie Brown, who had been with the American and the accused at Café XO that day.

According to Choksi’s statement, the girl called him up on April 14 saying she had been gangraped. He also recalled a conversation he had with her the previous night, when she and Brown had been out with the accused.

Choksi has told the police that between 2 am and 5.30 am on April 12,he had received a missed call from the American. When he called her,she asked him to come to a a flat in Andheri, where she was with five boys introduced by Brown. “I told her that I was in Colaba and I could not go,” said Choksi.

He said on April 14,when he was in Kolkata, the American called him around 6:45pm and said the same five friends had raped her and she would go to the police station to file a complaint. Choksi said he was upset by the news and tried to console her; also, the girl sounded very disturbed and he felt she was in need of medical help.

Brown, who left for Darjeeling on April 13,recalls a friendly outing, but “my friend called me on April 14 and narrated the incident after I had left. I felt terrible. I tried to meet her and find out her condition. She seemed upset and did not want to discuss the incident.”

Also quoted are the two autorickshaw drivers who dropped the American and accused at the Andheri flat rented by one of them. They described the trip and the address; their statements match the girl’s. The police have attached statements of the girls course co-coordinator,her friends and witnesses who had seen the accused taking her to the flat. Over 35 witnesses have given statements.

The girl has returned home to the US and taken admission to a law college. The police are primarily relying on the testimonies and medical evidence.
