The Maharashtra government has decided to impose a fine of Rs 10 lakh on movie theatre owners if they do not screen Marathi movies at least four weeks in a year, said state cultural minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Wednesday.

“Theatre owners will be fined Rs 10 lakh while renewing their licence if they do not screen Marathi movies at their cinema halls at least four weeks in a year,” said Mungantiwar during a meeting with officials and members of the film fraternity.

Mungantiwar also said that they have decided to notify the state home department in this regard, and appeal to them to not increase rent in single-screen cinemas.

According to officials, the move comes in a bid to promote Marathi movies across the state.

Despite the making of good-quality Marathi movies, the state-based producers have been complaining of no screening of these movies in their own state.

There have been many complaints in this regard for the past few weeks, and so, the department has taken this decision, the officials added.
