State goes all out to make Mantralaya
The state government is taking no chances with regard to fire-fighting mechanisms at the new-look Mantralaya.
Having learnt a bitter lesson from the fire last year, the state government is taking no chances with regard to fire-fighting mechanisms at the new-look Mantralaya. Each floor will have wet-risers,smoke detectors and advanced sprinkler systems below and above the false ceiling.
The absence of efficient internal fire-fighting systems in the building had caused the fire to spread rapidly before it could be doused externally.
An underground water storage tank below the garden, with a capacity to store nine lakh litres and a tank on the terrace with a holding capacity of 40,000 liters have been set up.
“All fire-fighting systems will be connected through the integrated building management system. This will help us know the exact location where smoke detector has set off an alarm. The sprinkler system will start functioning automatically and if the temperature reaches 65 degrees Celsius, the false ceiling will collapse and the sprinkler system above it will start spraying water,” said an architect with Raja Aederi that planned the project.
All staircases will be pressurised with fire-rated doors so that smoke doesn’t enter the staircase area and people can exit the
building safely.
The building will also feature several energy-efficient initiatives. Apart from central air-conditioning,cabins of ministers and secretaries will have VRV air-conditioning,which is energy-efficient and works on censors. The use of glass blocks, imported from Belgium and Italy,in place of windows is meant for optimum utilisation of natural light. “We have tried to incorporate as many green initiatives as possible,” said chief secretary J K Banthia.
Toilets will have a mechanised exhaust system and the grey water will go to an underground sewer water treatment plant of 5.4-lakh litre capacity on the premises. This water will be used for air-conditioning,gardening,flushing and fire-fighting.
A separate security dome will be made for the screening and entrance of visitors. The entire building will be fitted with access control and integrated building management system, sources.
