The state boards sports marks scheme was introduced in 2008. Students who participated in sports at the state or district level were to be awarded 25 extra marks. In 2008,627 students were awarded marks under the sports scheme. In 2009,the figure rose to 854,in 2010 it was 1,296,and in 2011,it was 1,077. Last year and this year, because of the the Best-Five policy and the sports marks scheme, some students scored 100%. In November 2011,the school education department decided to scrap the scheme from 2013 saying that it was being misused. From next year, only those who fail in subjects will get extra marks if they have played sports at state or district level. It should not be scrapped. Students who pass the exams and perform well in sports deserve extra marks. It encourages them to take up sports along with academics, said Guruprasad Rege, trustee,Balmohan Vidyalaya.
