The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is planning to introduce more Express buses in the city to ease traffic congestion.
The regular BEST buses do not use flyovers in the city, which leads to traffic snarls and delays. Since more flyovers are coming up in Mumbai especially on Dr Amedkar Road (from Sion to Byculla) these buses would escape traffic jams, said the proposal, which was tabled before the BEST committee on Thursday. The Express buses would use all the flyovers on the Eastern Express and the Western Express highway, the proposal added. BEST has already announced the starting of the Expressway bus service on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to escape the bottleneck at the Mahim causeway.
These buses would be termed as Limited buses. BEST is also contemplating use of air-conditioned (AC) buses on the new routes.
At present, there are three Express buses operational in the city. These include Express 8 (from Mantralaya to Shivaji Nagar terminus),Express 19 (Mantralaya to Shivaji Nagar depot),Express route no 40 (Prabhodhan Thackeray Udyan,Sewri to Borivali),

Commuters, however, will have to pay more to use the service. The fare would range from Rs 4 to Rs 20 for a single journey. BEST employees and cops will not be able to enjoy free rides on these buses.
Furthermore, the monthly Magic pass and the separate monthly passes meant for suburbs and city would be not be valid for journeys on these buses. Only the Global pass which costs Rs 750 and the Diamond pass which costs Rs 1000 will be usable. Rs 40 tickets for unlimited journeys will be introduced for travel by the new buses.
