The Modi rally, at the same venue, witnessed a massive turnout. To outperform Modi, the Congress has now asked all its party legislators to ensure presence of at least 5,000 people from their region for the mega rally. While the BJP had booked six grounds for Modi’s rally, Mumbai Congress president Janardan Chandurkar said that all 12 grounds available at the BKC have been booked for the Sonia rally. The Congress has 17 legislators in Mumbai city. The rally will also be an acid test for Mumbai Congress chief Chandurkar, whose wings were recently clipped by Gandhi herself with the appointment of a Mumbai coordination committee comprising MPs and ministers from Mumbai and three past presidents.
Sources said that Chandurkar has also been holding meetings with various Dalit factions and frontal organisations to mobilise crowd. With Congress workers from other districts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region also expected to be pressed into service, the party is aiming at a presence of over 2 lakh people. Sources said that the party has decided to rope in 4500 buses to transport people to the venue.
“This will be the last big rally any major political leader will have in Mumbai. We want it to be a grand show to lend one final push to our LS candidates,” a senior Congress minister said.
