Nisar Sayyad used a raincoat to hide his identity but his gait allegedly gave him away. In August last year, Sayyad, a courier company employee, was arrested by the Mumbai police for allegedly stealing Rs 1.5 lakh from the locker of his Vikhroli office. According to the police, Sayyad was arrested by matching his gait with that of the criminal caught on CCTV footage.

The incident took place at the courier company office located in Vikhroli on August 14 when it was found that Rs 1.5 lakh was missing from the office locker. The manager then approached the local police where an FIR was registered in the matter and the police began investigation.

An officer said that since the manager knew the approximate time when the crime was committed, they went through footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the office. The police found footage of a person, who is seen wearing a raincoat and entering the office around the same time and leaving within a few minutes.

“While we were sure this was the person behind the crime, the person had ensured his face was not captured in the CCTV,” the officer said. However, this itself turned out to be a clue for the police as they believed that it was someone who knew the location of the cameras and thus hinted at an insider job.

After watching the footage, the police questioned over 15 employees of the company. An officer said that all the employees were made to wear raincoats and asked to walk some distance. Based on their walking style, the police identified and arrested Sayyad, 21.

According to the police, Sayyad, a resident of Ghatkopar, had purchased a bike a year ago and wanted to repay the loan he had taken from a relative. After finding it difficult to get the money, he allegedly decided to steal money from the company locker as it was accessible to him.

He was placed under arrest on August 22 and produced before a court that remanded him to police custody. An officer said they found evidence, including Rs 80,000 cash, from his residence.
