Slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare’s wife passes away; family agrees to donate organs
Kavita Karkare was admitted in the hospital on Saturday morning after she suffered from brain haemorrhage.
Kavita Karkare, wife of slain former Anti Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare, passed away at Mumbai based P D Hinduja hospital, Mahim. She was declared brain dead on Monday morning.
According to a doctor from the hospital, she was admitted in the hospital on Saturday morning after she suffered from brain haemorrhage.
She was put on ventilator support until Monday until both her daughters flew from abroad to Mumbai. A statement from the hospital said, “The two daughters and son have consented to donate their mother, Late Mrs. Kavita Karkare’s organs for the treatment of needy patients.”
Karkare was rushed to hospital Saturday morning when she collapsed and entered into a state of coma. Dr P P Ashok, neurologist at the hospital, said, “She was brought to me in a totally vegetative state. She had collapsed by the time they made it to the hospital. Her brain was badly damaged.”
According to Ashok, while they knew she had suffered from brain haemorrhage, angiogram to confirm whether it was sub-arachnoid haemorrhage could not be done. Sub-arachnoid is bleeding in the space between thin tissues that cover the brain.
However, the doctor confirmed that such a condition is not triggered by depression or stress.
According to the hospital’s spokesperson, both the daughters and son of Karkare expressed their wish to donate her organs for transplant.
