A major tragedy was averted at Borivali railway station Wednesday morning after the motorman of a Churchgate-bound fast train observed the signal meant for another train and moved ahead. However, the fast train for which the signal was meant did not move, thereby avoiding a collision.
Following the incident,12 services were cancelled and 60 delayed. Motorman J K Sahu (37) mistook the signal of the adjacent up fast loop line near platform 6 as the signal for the up fast line near platform 5 and started the train. However, after three coaches went past the signal, the train was brought to a halt.
Varesh Moghaveera was the guard of the local. Sahu has 11 years of experience,an officer said.
Railway sources said the two signals are close to each other, which leads to confusion. A railway officer said the visual confusion has been brought to the notice of a signal sighting committee, which has suggested measures to WR to resolve the issue. While recommendations are yet to be implemented,WR is taking temporary measures, said an officer. A part of the cover over shed at platform 5 will be removed to improve the visibility of the signal, said a railway official.
Sandeep Silas, divisional railway manager (WR),said,An inquiry has been constituted into the incident. The inquiry (report) will also suggest measures to enhance safety.
