Defending champion and top seed Sangeeta Chandorkar of Mumbai suffered a shock defeat at the hands of unseeded Shilpa Palnitkar also from Mumbai in a women’s singles quarterfinal match of the 2nd Swami Vivekananda Memorial Prize-Money State Ranking Carrom Tournament,organised and conducted by Bengal Club,under the auspices of the MCA and MDCA,and played at the Bengal Club premises,Shivaji Park on Tuesday.

In other women’s last-eight round matches which went the distance,third seed Ayesha Mohammed of Mumbai got the better of city mate Netra Chunekar 25-13,13-25,25-11 and Thane’s Meenal Lele stunned fourth seed Urmila Shendge of Mumbai 25-9,7-25,25-14.

Men’s top seed and reigning champ Pankaj Pawar,third seed Anil Mundhe and fifth seed Vasant Vairal,both from Pune advanced to the semifinals. Pawar dropped the first game before winning the next two for a 18-25,25-22,25-4 win over Hidayat Ansari of Mumbai. Mundhe also staged a fight-back to post to 21-25,25-17,25-0 victory against Mumbai Ashok Gaur,while Vairal tamed Mumbai’s Shaikh Wasim 25-9,25-19.

Coach Pereira to leave Pune FC

Pune FC coach Derrick Pereira will be leaving the team at the end of this season,ending a four-year long association with the I-League club. Pereira will return to his home state Goa in order to stay with his family.

“Derrick has been excellent ambassador during his stay at Pune FC. We wish him well for all his success in future endeavors,” Head Operations Pune FC,Chirag Tanna said. “The 51-year-old’s departure brings to an end a fantastic spell,” he added. Pereira’s last game for Pune FC will be the home game against Pailan Arrows on May 11. During his stint at Pune FC,the club finished third in I-League 2009-10; fifth in 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. The club is currently placed at the second spot behind Churchill Brothers,in the 2012-13 season.

“The team has worked very hard with the focus of finishing the season on a high. The management will announce the new coach shortly,” Tanna said.
