Sheena Bora, daughter of Indrani Mukerjea, was murdered in 2012.

Officials from the British Consulate here visited Byculla jail earlier this week to check on Indrani Mukerjea, a British national of Indian origin. Indrani, who has been in judicial custody since Monday, has been arrested on the charge of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora. The police have also arrested two others — her second husband, Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver, Shyam Rai for being part of the conspiracy.

After getting married to Peter Mukerjea, Indrani obtained British nationality as Peter is a British national. “Since she is now a British  citizen, officials from the British embassy visited Byculla jail officials to check on her case and the facilities she has been extended,” a senior police officer said. “However the jail staff told them to get in touch with the the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to get access to the accused “ added the official, who declined to be named.

“The officials had visited Byculla jail after learning about Indrani’s arrest but we have told them to get in touch with MHA and get the requisite permission to meet her,” said Bipin Singh, Inspector General of Prisons.

Confirming the visit, though hesitating to speak much about the case, the spokesperson of the UK Consulate, Mumbai, told The Indian Express over an email, “We are providing consular assistance”. Five days after her arrest, on August 30, the Mumbai Police had written to the British embassy informing them about Indrani’s arrest. “In the letter we had informed the embassy that Indrani was arrested on August 25 under Indian laws for the murder of her daughter, Sheena. We have also shared the First Information Report (FIR) in the case with the embassy,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police has written to companies which run various social networking sites including Facebook and also Google for online data including the emails sent by the accused.

“We want to ascertain the Internet Protocal (IP) addresses from which Indrani allegedly sent mails and logged on social media sites on Sheena’s behalf and have therefore written to these companies. Investigations have revealed that Indrani had impersonated Sheena while she was in London and had sent emails to Peter, Mekhail and Vidhie. The IP addresses will help us ascertain our claims. This will be irrefutable evidence in the court of law,” said another senior official.

The police had recorded the statement of the former employer of Indrani who had created a hotmail id for Sheena at Indrani’s behest.
