Seeking bail again on medical grounds, Indrani Mukerjea, who has been in jail since August 2015 on allegations of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, told a court that if she does not get treatment for her ‘neurological complications’, she fears she will not survive.

“My health is deteriorating everyday. Every minute’s delay is causes damage to two million brain cells. My condition is critical and irreversible. Previously, I had showed symptoms of a brain stroke and facial paralysis… next time, if there is no doctor available at the jail or guards to rush me to the hospital, I am going to die,” Indrani, who is lodged in Byculla jail, submitted to the court.

She said that she realised this when her then husband and co-accused Peter Mukerjea, lodged in Arthur Road jail, suffered a heart attack in March last year while in prison. Peter, subsequently, underwent a bypass surgery.

Mukerjea said that she has not been made to undergo quarterly check-ups with a neurologist for over three years and has no immediate relatives in the city, who can coordinate with a private hospital if the need arises for treatment in case of an emergency. Mukerjea had previously claimed that an MRI scan of her brain had revealed “chronic ischemic changes” in her brain.

“I am praying with folded hands to be released. Let me go, because I am going to die. I am willing to give an undertaking that no witnesses will be contacted. I do not want them to turn hostile,” she said. Mukerjea further said that her daughter, Vidhie, is a young girl, who was 18 years old when she was arrested and that she needs her.

“I have learnt through a letter my daughter sent me that she was mugged in Spain and her belongings including her passport were stolen. I want to live as much as I can. I want to prove my innocence. It is unfair. I have been repeatedly saying that I have not done this. This is a bizarre, concocted, unreal story made up by the approver,” Mukerjea told the court.

Her former driver Shyamvar Rai, who was made an approver in the case, has told the court that on April 24, 2012, Mukerjea along with her former husband, Sanjeev Khanna and him, murdered Sheena and disposed her body the next day, in conspiracy with Peter.

Previous bail applications filed by Indrani, including on medical grounds and on merit, have been rejected by the court.
