THE BOMBAY High Court on Tuesday ‘restrained’ the state government from releasing water from Gangapur dam for facilitating the Kumbh mela. The court, however, made it clear that it was not restraining the Nashik Municipal Council from drawing water for drinking purposes.

A division bench of Justices AS Oka and VL Achliya was hearing a petition filed by HM Desarda, a professor from Pune, seeking quashing of the state government’s decision to release one TMC water for every ‘shahi snan (holy dip)’ as the state is reeling under a drought-like situation.

“There is admission that during shahi snan on August 29, September 13 and September 18, water was released from Gangapur dam under orders of the collector,” said the court pointing to a letter written by the collector, which authorised release of water for shahi snan.
