Sena ‘acquires’ pvt land to retail Shiv Vada Pav

The Shiv Vada Pav scheme may have hit a roadblock with the Shiv Sena-controlled BMC unable to find space for kiosks on pavements, but the party is now pushing its plan through by acquiring privately owned land.

The scheme, announced last year, hit several legal hurdles including a Supreme Court verdict that prohibits food stalls on roads and footpaths. The Sena has given up hopes of a BMC-run scheme. Also, with the model code of conduct in effect, leaders are unsure if the scheme can take off before the year-end.

MP Sanjay Raut, the brain behind the project, confirmed. “We are no longer banking on the BMC for land. If we get some stalls from the BMC it will be good, but we will carry out the full-fledged project on private land,” he said.

Eighty stalls have been functional since June,30 in Mumbai and the rest in Dombivli,Thane and Bhiwandi. A standardised Shiv Vada Pav,made by recipe-trained youths, sells at Rs 6. “We will soon launch 100 more stalls on private land in our possession,” Raut said. Possession,he added, had been taken “Sena style”.

As per the original proposal,125 stalls were to be set up. The BMC got 4,500 applications but the land hurdle cropped up; now,it will be able to provide only a franchise in canteens. “We can provide some space in canteens at civic buildings. Near gardens or outside civic schools is impossible,” said deputy municipal commissioner Yogesh Mahangade.

Any proposal for space in canteens needs law department clearance; it cannot be placed before other statutory panels due to the model code of conduct.

The Congress’s plan of 125 stalls for Kaanda Pohe is also delayed due to the code of conduct and the civic committee deferred a decision on Tuesday.
