Annual inter-school science exhibition

The two-day Inter-school Science Exhibition,Expiscor 2013, was hosted by Lady Ratanbai and Sir Mathuradas Vissanji Academy withe Nehru Science Centre on 29th & 30th November at their campus. The event saw young participants from ICSE schools of Mumbai putting up over 50 exhibits,comprising innovative working models and investigation based projects.

The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the trustees Hemant Vissanji and Arati Vissanji,Dr Arnab Bhattacharya (Associate Professor TIFR) and Principal Neeru Nayyer. Shrikant Pathak,curator of Nehru Science Centre who inaugurated the exhibition was impressed by the presentations and congratulated the participants. The projects were judged by Dr Arnab Bhattacharya and his team of 17 scientists from R & D institutes.

Shrikant Pathak demonstrated experiments that left the audience speechless. Shivprasad Khened ,Director of Nehru Science Centre,who was the Chief Guest on the second day,made references to our first PM Jawaharlal Nehru who termed building of dams as ‘building of temples of Modern India’. He also cited Dr Chandrashekhar’s contribution to science.


The winning participants were presented with student membership of Nehru Science Centre,cash award,gift vouchers of DIY kit,merit certificates and trophies. The participants’ contributions were acknowledged with certificates,student membership of Nehru Science Centre and mementos.

St Francis observes World AIDS Day

Students of St Francis High School conducted a special assembly on World Aids Day,on 1st December. It was dedicated to raising awareness of the pandemic.

The students wore a red ribbon on their school uniform. Many gave information about aids and spoke against discrimination.

Field trip to Meherallyy

Grade IX students of Ryan International School,Chembur,visited Yusuf Meherally,the rural development centre at Panvel as part of their SUPW project. They saw cottage industries being run by the organization for the development of the rural people,like soap factory,oil factory,bakery,etc. They also got the opportunity to try their hands at pottery.

Birla School wins inter-school contest

An Interschool competition was held in Kendriya Vidyalaya,Ambernath. The school organised a series of contests on its golden jubilee. Birla School participated in the Hindi recitation competition and won the first prize. For the group dance competition,a toss was done to see who will perform first and so on. Our school performed first.

Golden jubilee alumni meet at NITIE

The advent of 2013 brought a special era for National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) as it celebrated its Golden Jubilee. As a part of the celebrations,the Golden Jubilee Alumni Meet – “Sansmaran” was organised on 16th November. “Sansmaran”,which means reminiscence,is the inspiration behind the ideology of the event,which provides a platform for the alumni to reconnect with their alma mater.

As a prelude to Sansmaran,NITIE inaugurated the Distinguished Guest Lecture Series on 15th November with a session by Dr Rakesh Agrawal on “Enriching Electronic Text Books”. He heads the Microsoft Search Labs,Silicon Valley,USA,and is a NITIE alumnus. He has been granted 61 patents and has published over 150 research papers. He is the most cited author in the field of database systems. The talk was attended by students from premier management and engineering institutes.

On the morning of 16th November,alumni visited NITIE campus and appreciated new infrastructure.

In the afternoon,a CEO conclave was organised on “How Manufacturing can drive Economic Growth” at Hotel Ramada Convention Center,Powai,Mumbai.

The participating CEOs included S P Shukla,Member – Mahindra Group Executive Board,President – Group Strategy & Defence Sector; Dr G Ramaseshan,Chief Executive (Manufacturing),BASF India Ltd,Ravi Khanna,Chief Executive Officer – Solar Power Business,Aditya Birla Group,Mumbai; Ipsita Dasgupta,Chief Marketing Officer – GE South Asia & Greater China,GE; Dr Ganesh Natarajan,Former Chairman,NASSCOM,Vice Chairman and CEO of Zensar Technologies and Prof Karuna Jain,Director,NITIE. The conclave was moderated by Charulata R K,CEO,Product of the year and Columnist,The Indian Express. The topic was in line with the National manufacturing policy recently announced by the Government of India.

The conclave was followed by conferring the special Golden Jubilee Distinguished Alumnus Award to Dr Rakesh Agrawal. Distinguished Alumnus Award was conferred on Dr Rakesh Kumar Sinha,COO,Global Supply Chain,Godrej Consumer Products Ltd; S Balakrishna,GM Sweets of Oman; Dr Kanak Madrecha,MD & principal consultant,Dr Kanak Madrecha & Associates; Devajyoti Bhattacharya,Group Executive President & Business Head of Aditya Birla Group and K Subramanian,Vice Chairman and MD – Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

The award winners were introduced by Prof Ashok K Pundir,Honorary Secretary,NITIE Alumni Association and Dean,Student Affairs & Placements and Prof Karuna Jain. NITIE Alumni Association handed over the awards in the presence of galaxy of alumni such as Rakesh Mehta,Dr Ganesh Natarajan and others. Various jubilee batches were felicitated.


The feeling of nostalgia flowed as the alumni visited the campus and relived their memories at NITIE. An interactive networking session was organised wherein alumni shared their experiences with the current students at NITIE.
