West Bengal government Thursday removed Trinamool Congress MP Satabdi Roy from the post of the chairperson of Sriniketan Santiniketan Development Authority (SSDA) in Birbhum district, two months after she shared the dais with some dissident party leaders.
While the TMC leadership and Roy tried to downplay the development, sources in TMC ranks confirmed that Roy has been removed from the post for making some controversial comments about the party in the programme organised by the dissident TMC MP Somen Mitra.
Mridul Halder, executive officer of SSDA,told the media that they got an order from the state urban development department regarding appointment of Chandranath Sinha as the new chairman of the organisation. Sinha is the Bolpur MLA and also the state fisheries minister.
Satabdi Roy,meanwhile, said she had herself relinquished the post due to other preoccupations.
“There should not be any controversy over my removal from the SSDA. I requested Didi (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) to relieve me as I would be very busy with Jatra (theatre) in January and February,” the MP said.
She was talking to the media after meeting party general secretary Mukul Roy.
Terming it as a routine development,Mukul Roy,said,“I was also an adviser to the state government. But I was removed. It is the prerogative of the Chief Minister. There is no controversy here,” he said.
A filmstar-turned-politician,Satabdi Roy had participated in a blood donation camp with three other party MPs – Kunal Ghosh,Tapas Pal and Somen Mitra — and rebel party MLA Shikha Mitra in September. This, party sources said, had invited the wrath of the party leaders as a section of Trinamool leadership was criticised at the function.
