SENIOR IPS officer and Force One head Sanjay Saxena was appointed as chief of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday. The post had been lying vacant since Atulchandra Kulkarni was transferred as the Anti-Terrorism Squad head on May 26.

In 2014, Saxena was named as the head of Force One, a unit set up after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Prior to this, the 1993-batch officer had a long stint in Nagpur as the joint commissioner of police. He has also served in the CBI and the EOW, besides holding the post of deputy commissioner of police in Mumbai Zone 8 and Bhiwandi.

A challenge before the 51-year-old officer as he takes up the post will be overseeing the probe in the alleged fake encounter of Gurgaon gangster Sandeep Gadoli. Another would be to track down Vidyadhar Rajbhar, accused of killing artist Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani.
