A history-sheeter, Mayur Shinde (40), was arrested Wednesday over a threat call received by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut. As Shinde is known to Raut and linked to another Maharashtra party, the BJP alleged that the MP had staged the threat call.
The Kanjurmarg police, which have arrested five people in the case so far, remain tight-lipped about the motive behind the threat call. “The probe is at its initial stage and it would be premature to make any connections in the case,” a senior officer said. “We will be questioning Shinde to find out why he ordered the threat calls.”
An officer said that after they received a complaint about a threat call received by MLA Sunil Raut, younger brother of Sanjay Raut, they registered an FIR. They arrested two people from Govandi identified as Rizwan Ansari (26), an auto driver, and Shahid Ansari (27), who does interior design work, on June 10. On the basis of their interrogation, police arrested Aakash Patel (29), a Mankhurd-based auto driver, on June 11 and Mohammad Shaikh alias Munna (38), an unemployed Dharavi resident, on Tuesday.
“While questioning Munna, we found out about the involvement of Mayur Shinde, following which he was arrested on Wednesday,” an officer said. Shinde was produced before the Mulund court on Thursday and remanded in police custody till June 19.
BJP leader Nitesh Rane tweeted photographs showing Shinde with both Sanjay Raut and Sunil Raut. Later, in a video statement, BJP leader Prakash Lad said, “The drama done by Sanjay Raut has been exposed. His attempts to fool the people, police and the state administration has come to light. I request the Mumbai police commissioner to register an FIR against Raut.”
