A man picked up for questioning in Sandhya Singh murder case has been arrested instead for murdering his wife. Mumbai police crime branch’s property cell picked him up Wednesday to question in the case of Singh, sister of yesteryear actors Sulakshana and Vijeta Pandit.

It turned out to be a false alarm but interrogation revealed he had murdered his wife last December after a quarrel, police said.

Singh, who was also sister of music composers Jatin-Lalit,had gone missing on December 13 and her skeletal remains were found near Palm Beach Road in January.

“Wednesday,we received information that a man who killed a woman in December had come to work as a daily wage labourer in Panvel. As Sandhya was murdered in December,we picked up Ajay Jadhav,25,for questioning,” said a crime branch official.

Police said that on prolonged questioning,he admitted to killing his own wife. “In September,Jadhav converted to Islam and changed to Mustafa Sheikh. He married his love interest Yasmeen Sheikh. His alcoholism and abusive nature continued even after Yasmeen got pregnant. There were bitter arguments between the couple. During an argument on December 17,Jadhav strangled Yasmeen to death and had been on the run since,” said the officer. Jadhav was handed over to Kalwa police.

Inquiries revealed that Jadhav was arrested in 2010 for killing a neighbour and had spent 14 months in Taloja Central Jail, after which he shifted to Kalwa, where he met Yasmeen, police said.

In March, the Crime Branch’s Unit 6 arrested autorickshaw driver Arif Mehdi Hassan in an illegal arms case. His likely involvement in Singh’s murder was probed,as the crime branch found he had a record of contract killings, and had been in Navi Mumbai when Singh went missing. Investigations could not link him to the murder.
