Sand, construction materials worth Rs 100 crore seized in last two years: Nagpur Rural police

Talking about the significant increase in the arrests, Poddar said, “One of the most effective strategies that led to increase in arrests was the creation of a network of informers who provide real-time intelligence on illegal transportation of sand. Additionally, accountability was enforced through strict action against local law enforcement officers, such as SHOs and beat officers, especially in cases where cross-raids revealed negligence or complicity.”

Poddar added, “In regions like Nagpur rural, which isn’t a major mining zone but serves as a transit route for sand transport, enforcement becomes challenging. The district is significantly impacted by illegal supply flowing in from surrounding areas.”

Earlier this week, a truck which was ferrying illegally excavated sand met with an accident in Nagpur resulting in the death of one Zahoor Hassan.

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the state’s Sand Excavation and Disposal Policy 2025 which will have the provision of up to 5 brass of free sand to beneficiaries of government housing schemes. The sand will now be sold through a transparent auction process.
