The Juhu police on Wednesday arrested a janitor with a Juhu-based school for allegedly sexually assaulting a four year-old student in the school washroom on Monday.

In January last year, a four-year-old girl studying in the same school was molested by a school bus attendant, who was recently convicted and sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the Juhu police, the incident took place on Monday morning when the victim, a student of lower kindergarten, had gone to the washroom. The suspect, identified as Saby Chavan (25), was cleaning the washroom when the victim entered it.

The police said Chavan sexually assaulted the girl and left. The victim did not tell anyone about the incident at the time.

On Tuesday, she complained of pain in her private parts and had to be taken to a hospital near her residence. Suspecting that something was wrong, the victim’s mother asked her if “something strange” had happened to her, after which the victim narrated the events that had transpired the previous day. Her shocked mother immediately approached the Juhu police to register a complaint.

“We have registered a case of rape and molestation against Chavan under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Chavan has been remanded by a court to police custody till October 8,” said Abhay Shastri, senior inspector at Juhu police station.

The police said they launched a manhunt for Chavan immediately after registering the complaint. However, he had gone to visit his mother in his native place as she was in poor health. He returned on Wednesday and was subsequently picked up.
